I am neither a technician when it comes to reviewing cameras, nor a true collector. The Nikons I own are meant to be used, not stored in a cabinet for admiration.

I’m simply a photographer who has been working with Nikon cameras since 1975. Despite my age (70), I’m still active, both on assignments and for my own publishing house, mostly working in the studio with a Nikon D810.

I still own several analogue Nikons and regularly take them out for a stroll. My favorite is not the ever-popular F3, but the F4. It received a lukewarm reception when it first appeared, but I’ve always thought it was a miraculous camera and I love working with it. I like to joke that when I want to look good, I take my near-mint Nikon F2 for a walk. Unfortunately, I often forget to advance the film before the next shot, and yes – after taking a photograph, I still have the reflex to check the back of the camera for the result, though there’s obviously no screen. Old habits die hard.

I have a few good reasons for photographing with Nikon:

  1. Until a few years ago, Nikon never changed the F-mount, so I still use lenses that go back several decades. Not the best marketing strategy perhaps, but certainly a considerate and respectful one toward Nikon photographers.
  2. Nikon cameras are sturdy. In fifty years, not one of mine has ever broken down.
  3. I simply love the company. Nikon has always pushed technical boundaries – most recently by teaming up with RED to create a camera that, in my opinion, easily outperforms any consumer Sony when it comes to filmmaking.
